How Successful Business Owners Protect Their Marriage
Jul 23, 2026
A few years ago I sat across from a guy who had just crossed seven figures.
He told me about the milestone the way you'd report the weather. Flat. Almost bored. Then he said something I've heard a hundred times since in different words, "I don't know how to turn it off."
He wasn't struggling in his business. He was winning. But somewhere in the winning, home had become the place he went to recover, not the place he showed up for. His wife wasn't angry. That was almost the worst part. She had just stopped expecting him.
Here's what I've learned working with business owners for over a decade: The ones whose marriages thrive aren't the ones who work less. They're the ones who transition better.
They treat the transition as a skill
Most business owners have a system for everything. Sales calls, hiring, cash flow...almost none of them have a system for walking through the front door.
So they arrive home carrying the last unresolved thing from the day. The client who went quiet. The number that didn't hit. Their body is in the kitchen. Their nervous system is still in the meeting.
The owners who protect their marriage build a ritual around the gap. Some sit in the car for three minutes before going inside. Some take a walk around the block. Some have a phrase they say out loud to mark the shift.
It sounds small. It's not. You cannot be present with your wife while your body is still braced for a problem.
They make small deposits instead of big gestures
There's a pattern I see constantly. The business owner who misses six weeks of ordinary evenings and then books an expensive anniversary trip to make up for it. The trip is nice, but it doesn't work.
Gottman's research on this is clear. What predicts marital stability isn't the grand gesture. It's the accumulation of small bids for connection and whether they get answered. A text in the middle of the day. Looking up when she walks in the room. Asking a follow-up question instead of nodding.
I call this the 10/90. Ten percent of what holds a marriage together happens in the big moments. Ninety percent happens in the ordinary ones you're tempted to skip because you're tired.
The owners who last stop trying to buy back the ninety percent. They just stop skipping it.
They let their spouse see the hard part
This is the one that costs the most.
Most business owners have been rewarded their whole career for looking like they have it handled. Confidence closes deals. Certainty keeps a team calm. So they carry that same posture into their marriage without noticing.
And their wife ends up married to a press release.
The men whose marriages actually deepen are the ones who let their wife see the unresolved version. Not the fixed version. The one that says "I'm scared this doesn't work" before it's already worked out.
That's not weakness. That's the only thing that creates real closeness. Your wife doesn't need you to be impressive. She's already impressed. She needs to know you.
They repair fast
Every marriage has ruptures. The difference is the recovery time.
Business owners are often excellent at moving on and terrible at repairing. Moving on means we don't talk about it and it fades. Repair means going back, naming what happened, and saying what you actually meant.
Three days of distance after a hard conversation is not neutral. It's teaching both of you that hard things go unaddressed here.
The owners who protect their marriage go back within twenty-four hours. Not to relitigate. To reconnect.
The thing nobody tells you
You will not accidentally end up with a great marriage while building a great business.
Your business has a plan. Your marriage probably has hope. And hope is not a strategy.
The good news is this is learnable. It's a skill set, not a personality type. The men I work with who make the biggest shift aren't the most emotionally gifted. They're the ones who decided it mattered enough to actually practice.
I'm teaching the full framework live on August 5th at 9am CST. One hour. It's the same framework I walk my private clients through, and it's built specifically for business owners who are winning at work and want the same thing at home.
